Within the Downtown Disney District, guests can extend the fall fun with festive décor, limited-time food and beverage offerings at select locations, and entertainment. New this year, weekly movie nights will take place at the Downtown Disney Live! stage and lawn every Wednesday from Sept. 24 through Oct. 31, 2025, with an accompanying sweet treat cart.

Plaza de la Familia honors the spirit of Día de los Muertos

Releasing in early September, the new Disney Pixar Coco Collection will introduce new apparel, accessories, headwear and more inspired by the film.

Sing and dance along as “The Storytellers of the Plaza de la Familia Celebrate the Musical World of Coco!” street performance brings to life the everlasting bonds of family. After each performance, guests may pose for photos and make new memories with Miguel, brought to life as a hand-animated dimensional figure. Frontierland in Disneyland Park also pays tribute to Día de los Muertos by adorning the area near Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante with skeleton figures, brilliant marigolds and other decorative items typically displayed on ofrendas.

Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration continues
Select experiences from the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration remain available for guests to enjoy throughout the fall season for a once-in-a-lifetime blend of offerings, including “Paint the Night” parade, “Tapestry of Happiness” on the facade of “it’s a small world” and “World of Color Happiness!” on select nights.

Howl-O-Scream Returns with Ultimate Frights
Once the sun goes down, the screams rise. Beginning September 12 and running select nights through November 1, SeaWorld San Diego transforms into a twisted world of terror with the return of Howl-O-Scream. The separately ticketed event designed for brave souls 13 and older, includes intensified haunted houses, unrelenting scare zones, a bone-chilling live show, and hair-raising coaster rides in the dark, Howl-O-Scream pushes the limits of fear and fun.

Brace yourself. Howl-O-Scream, San Diego’s largest, most bone-chilling, adrenaline-pumping Halloween event, storms back into SeaWorld San Diego starting September 12, haunting select nights through November 1. Now in its fifth blood-soaked year, this twisted celebration of terror explodes with reimagined haunted houses, freshly spawned scare zones, and sinister performances. Developed and crafted entirely in-house by the SeaWorld San Diego team. Howl-O-Scream sets itself apart from the competition as a purely original creation: a nightmare engineered to leave guests breathless and begging for mercy. Now and for a limited time during the Monster Sale guests can buy now and save up to 65% off tickets with tickets as low as $32.99 at https://seaworld.com/san-diego/events/howl-o-scream/ .

Reimagined Twisted Houses Bring Fresh Terror to the Night
Two returning fan-favorite haunted houses have received a complete revamp in celebration of five years of fear, bringing even more elaborate scares and detailed storytelling:

  • In the newly reimagined Nightmare Experiment Sweet DreamzZz, guests are led through a converted asylum now run by a mysterious pharmaceutical company testing a sleep aid with horrifying side effects. From hallucinations to uncontrollable rage, the results are disastrous – and you’re the next test subject!
  • Also reimagined this year is Deathwater Bayou Awakening, where a Mardi Gras night in New Orleans takes a dark turn – guests are bewitched and dragged into a cursed bayou, where witches summon an ancient, ravenous deity. With every step, the swamp grows darker and more alive – and escape becomes more unlikely.

Joining the lineup are three fan-favorite haunted houses, now resurrected with a few new twists and deeper nightmares—designed to push returning guests beyond the screams they thought they’d already survived. Circus of the Damned unleashes chaos and confusion in a neon-lit, 3-D clown nightmare, while Simon’s Slaughterhouse delivers a gruesome walk through a deranged meat factory. Area 64: Alien Outbreak brings extraterrestrial terror, luring guests inside a quarantined facility where aliens – and government secrets – have slipped loose.

ALL-NEW Scare Zones Take the Fright Outside the Maze
The terror isn’t limited to the houses. Eight immersive scare zones fill the park with haunting characters and hair-raising frights at every turn, each designed to keep guests on edge with every step. Adding to the lineup of scare zones this year is the new Overgrowth, a nightmarish walk through an overrun greenhouse where a botanist’s mutant plant experiments now feed on passersby. This dark, tangled forest leaves little room to run – or breathe.
Returning favorites include Ripper Row, where the infamous killer still stalks fog-drenched streets, Deadly Toys, featuring demonic dolls and twisted plush playthings and Carnival of Chaos, where deranged carnies wait to recruit new victims.

ALL-NEW Vile Vignettes with Disturbing Stories That Bite Back
Vile Vignettes, spine-tingling horror stories come to life, are back with two new tales of terror:

  • In Summon the Spirits, an amateur paranormal investigator arrives in Ripper Row determined to contact a victim of Jack the Ripper. As the séance begins, something darker answers instead.
  • Dolly Delightful, an eerily perfect porcelain doll, finally breaks free from her pristine box – and has quite the temper. Guests must watch out as she has an appetite for dismembering any limbs that get too close to the try me button on her box.

These stories join returning favorites like Dark Magic and Misfortune, where illusions and curses blur the line between reality and your greatest nightmares.

Monster Stomp Slashes Its Way Back After a Killer Run
After leaving audiences screaming for more last year, Monster Stomp on Ripper Row returns to the stage in all its sinister glory. This electrifying live show blends thunderous percussion, eerie vocals and haunting visuals into a gothic rock spectacle set in the streets of Victorian London. A twisted take on the legend of Jack the Ripper, the show quickly became a standout favorite, offering a thrilling – and chilling – break from the terror outside. Dark, theatrical and endlessly entertaining, Monster Stomp proves some nightmares are too good to stay dead.

This killer event will have more announcements – stay tuned for more devilish news about our entertainment, new themed food and bars, hidden speakeasies, plus more. Intended for a mature audience, Howl-O-Scream offers the most fun and frightening Halloween experiences in one place. Howl-O-Scream is a separately ticketed event. Monster Sale tickets are limited and must be purchased by August 17 to save up to 65% off. Tickets purchased during the Monster Sale can be used on any event night from September 12 to November 1. Halloween Horror Nights Opens at Universal Studios Hollywood, Kicking Off Southern California’s Most Extreme Halloween Event, now through Sunday, November 2

Event Scares with Eight All-New and Returning Terrifying Haunted Houses, the Menacing Terror Tram, Frightening Scare Zones and Daring Live Entertainment; and Introduces a New Halloween Horror Nights Dining Pass

With eight all-new and returning haunted houses, the infamous Terror Tram, multiple scare zones and live entertainment, Halloween Horror Nights is Southern California’s scariest Halloween event inspired by the biggest names in horror.

At a glance, Halloween Horror Nights 2025 at Universal Studios Hollywood features the following:

  • “Fallout” will take guests into the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Prime Video’s critically acclaimed series.
  • “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” based on Blumhouse’s hit movie where nothing is as it seems at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.
  • “Terrifier,” inspired by the slasher film franchise that brings the twisted world of Art the Clown to life.
  • “WWE Presents: The Horrors of The Wyatt Sicks” immerses guests in the world of WWE, going head-to-head with Uncle Howdy in an experience that features The Wyatt Sicks and honors the legacy of Bray Wyatt.
  • “Jason Universe” features horror movie icon Jason from the infamous Friday the 13th films.
  • “Poltergeist, based onAmazon MGM Studios’ supernatural cult horror classic, will bring guests “into the light.”
  • “Scarecrow: Music by SLASH” puts retribution at the forefront in which Mother Nature seeks vengeance on the homesteaders for their sins of the past that will be carried out by farmland scarecrows. SLASH’s original score will deliver an unnerving sense of fear as guests navigate the ominous corridors of the haunted house.
  • “Monstruos 3: The Ghosts of Latin America,” the final chapter where three ghostly legends of Latin America await.
  • “Terror Tram: Enter the Blumhouse” enables guests to disembark the Studio Tour tram and set off on foot to encounter some of the most iconic villains from Blumhouse’s popular horror franchises over the past 15 years.
  • “The Purge: Dangerous Waters,” a live stunt show that takes visitors on a fiery, rock-fueled adventure while they fight to survive the night.
  • “Chainsaw Clownz,” a troop of chainsaw killers confront guests in this scare zone as they enter the event.
  • “Carnival of Carnage,” an all-new scare zone featuring a maniacal fun house.
  • “Noche de Brujas,” a scare zone that extends the terror from “Monstruos 3: The Ghosts of Latin America.”
  • “Murder of Crowz,” the popular scare zone returns with a flock of menacing crows doing anything – and everything – to defend their nest.

“Chainsaw Man: The Chaos” makes its Hollywood debut exclusively at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights within the DreamWorks Theatre. This all-original horror anime short film arrives directly from Universal Studios Japan based on the popular Japanese manga and anime series streaming now on Crunchyroll. The film will play in-language and recounts the tale of Denji and the Devil Hunters as they battle the Halloween Horror Nights Devil and his army of zombies. Denji, resurrected into Chainsaw Man, a devil-human hybrid with protruding chainsaws from his body, ultimately takes control in a quest to combat the Devils. It’s an extreme showdown that dares guests to survive a chaos of screams and blood.

The specially curated food and beverage items available at Halloween Horror Nights rank among the most indulgent offerings at the event, and for good reason. Executive Chef Julia Thrash and her culinary team bring the same level of details to these treats as Universal’s entertainment team brings to the haunted houses.

This year’s added bonus includes the arrival of a Halloween Horror Nights Dining Pass, inviting guests to feast on select food and beverage options for a single price. The Dining Pass is available for purchase here and at participating theme park restaurants. Each Dining Pass entitles guests to six items, consisting of two eligible entrée items and four eligible side, snack, dessert or beverage items. All eligible menu items will be designated by a Universal Studios Dining Pass logo on the restaurant menu boards. The Dining Pass is redeemable at participating food and beverage locations only and is valid on the selected visit date. Additional restrictions apply.

Covid protocols continue to be dictated by each individual venue, so bring a face mask to wear during the show in case the venue requires it. It’s a good idea to check with the theater before you attend a show to find out what their current policy is.
The information presented in this column is the latest available at the time of printing, however you should verify it with the theater to confirm it before making definite plans. Here are the shows that have announced opening dates for this month, or are already running:

OPENING

“Adolescent Salvation” Over the course of one night, through a haze of tequila, texting, and Taylor Swift, three teens banter, bicker and push each other to the edge of danger – with consequences that could prove lethal by morning. This searingly funny and fearlessly inquisitive play examines the moral complexity of the kinds of characters we judge most harshly – and the fatal consequences of ignoring our own complicity in the deeds that we condemn. Written by Tim Venable, and directed by Guillermo Cienfuegos, it runs September 5 through October 12 at the Matrix Theatre – Upstairs on the Henry Murray Stage in Los Angeles. For tickets call 855-585-5185 or visit www.roguemachinetheatre.org.

“Fly Me to the Sun” When Abuela Julia arrives from El Salvador to live with her family in a Chicago suburb, her grandson learns to see America through his grandmother’s eyes — while also teaching her to enjoy simple American pleasures. Relaying the story in the style of a late-night talk show in which the young BQ (Gerardo Navarro) is the host and Julia (magically portrayed as a hand puppet) is his special guest, Fly Me to the Sun weaves Quijada’s beautiful, semi-autobiographical story about the moments that move us and what calls us home. Meanwhile, older brother Marvin (Noe Cervantes) deejays, with a playlist that pays homage to R&B, hip-hop, Latin-American music and American standards. Written by Brian Quijada, with music by Marvin Quijada, and directed by Raymond O. Caldwell, it runs September 6 through October 12 at the Fountain Theatre in Los Angeles. For tickets call 323-663-1525 or visit www.FountainTheatre.com.

“One Man, Two Guvnors” Things start to look a little brighter for Francis Henshall, a hapless, out of work musician in England’s seaside town of Brighton, when he lands two jobs in one fantastic day. But now he’s working for two bosses at the same time, all the while keeping each unaware of the other’s existence. They, meanwhile, are just as busy — separated lovers on the run from the mob, they end up at the same pub, neither knowing that the other is there… which isn’t difficult, because one of them is in drag. Packed with physical comedy, quick wit and a live skiffle band, One Man, Two Guvnors is an evening of witty, irreverent social commentary, music and unapologetic farce. Written by Richard Bean, adapted from The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni, with music by Gary Olding, and directed by Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott, it runs September 6 through September 28 at the A Noise Within in Pasadena. For tickets call 626-356-3100 or visit www.anoisewithin.org.

“Pericles” Part adventure, part fairytale, and full of heart, this immersive production of Shakespeare’s Pericles invites audiences to travel through mystical lands, meet pirates and nuns, and dance alongside a cast of unforgettable characters. When Pericles leaves home in search of fortune, they cross paths with a cast of strange and wondrous characters — wacky kings, mysterious nuns, evil queens, and the love of their life. But when tragedy strikes and that love is lost at sea, Pericles keeps moving to outrun grief. Will they find their way home or something even better? Running time is 90 minutes. Written by William Shakespeare, and directed by Amanda McRaven, it runs September 6 through September 21 at the Kings Road Park in West Hollywood. For tickets visit www.pericles-weho2025.eventbrite.com.

“Right” From 2024 to 2025 the number of measles cases in the US has grown almost 450%; there have been 3 deaths so far this year. Over a quarter of a million kindergarteners are not vaccinated against measles. Fewer than 40% of Americans say they trust doctors. RIGHT examines what happens when an expectant couple risks fracturing their family when they refuse to let their unvaccinated nephew near their baby, igniting a relentless battle over science, safety, and loyalty. Written by Darryl Vinyard, and directed by Bryan Rasmussen, it runs September 6 through October 18 at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks. For tickets call 818-687-8559 or visit www.whitefiretheatre.com.

“Am I Roxie?” In this fiercely funny one-woman tour-de-force based on her own life, writer/actor Roxana Ortega navigates the chaos of her mother’s mental decline with outrageous humor and unbreakable spirit. Playing everything from a mermaid-obsessed aunt to a prickly sherpa, Roxie takes us on a wild ride into an opera house, up a killer mountain, and through the doomscape of her own mind. Heartfelt and hilarious, Am I Roxie? explores duty, destiny, and how facing your darkest fears can reveal who you truly are. Written by Roxana Ortega, and directed by Bernardo Cubría, it runs September 11 through October 5 at the Gil Cates Theater at Geffen Playhouse in Westwood. For tickets call 310-208-2028 or visit www.geffenplayhouse.org.

“Ragtime the Musical” At the dawn of a new century, everything is changing… and anything is possible. Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, three distinctly American tales are woven together – that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician – united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the future. Together, they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair… and what it means to live in America. With a Tony Award-winning score which blends ragtime, blues, jazz and show tunes, it’s a powerful, sweeping saga of America! Written by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and directed by David Ralphe, it runs September 12 through September 21 at the El Portal Theatre Debbie Reynolds Mainstage in North Hollywood. For tickets call 818-508-4200 or visit www.elportaltheatre.com.

That serendipitous meeting on Dec. 4, 1956, turned into one of the most memorable jam sessions in the history of music. The Memphis Press-Scimitar newspaper chronicled the session the next day under the headline “Million Dollar Quartet.” Written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, and directed by James Moye and Kim Martin-Cotton, it runs September 13 through October 11 at the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa. For tickets call 714-708-5555 or visit www.scr.org.

Bobby’s unexpected arrival forces them to confront the brutal childhood and wartime trauma they’ve long buried, along with a devastating shared secret that could shatter the life Dennis has built. As the night unfolds, their reunion becomes a tense battle of wills, peeling back layers of guilt, betrayal, and the moral injuries that still bleed long after the war’s end. Written and directed by David Kohner Zuckerman, it runs September 19 through October 26 at the Odyssey Theatre in West Los Angeles. For tickets visit www.OdysseyTheatre.com.

“Come from Away” is based on the true story of how, unexpectedly, the isolated community of Gander, Newfoundland, played host to the world. What started as an average day in a small town turned into an international sleepover, when 38 planes, carrying thousands of people from around the globe, were diverted to Gander’s airstrip on September 11, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, the people of Gander cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar, and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family. Written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, with music by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and directed by Richard J. Hinds, it runs September 20 through October 12 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in La Mirada. For tickets call 562-944-9801 or visit www.LaMiradaTheatre.com.

“Go Play!” is a poignant comedy about three strangers and their dogs meeting for the first time at a dog park. The flamboyant show poodle, pampered Yorkie, and scrappy rescue have plenty to say behind their clueless owners’ backs and often make more sense than they do. As the humans fumble through personal crises and unexpected connections, their four-legged sidekicks watch—and comment—on it all. Written and directed by Barra Grant, it runs September 20 through November 2 at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles. For tickets visit www.odysseytheatre.com.

“The Night of the Iguana” tells the story of the Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a defrocked minister now conducting guided tours through Mexico on the verge of a nervous breakdown. As he struggles with his connection to God and yearns to escape his own tortured existence, he is surrounded by two equally imperfect women, one of whom offers him sensuality, the other spirituality as a means of easing his tormented soul. Taking place over the course of one turbulent night at the Costa Verde hotel on the verge of a world war, the play asks what constitutes escape, what bargains are we willing to make with ourselves, and how much we yearn for real human connection – especially when we’re at the end of our rope. Written by Tennessee Williams, and directed by Jessica Kubzansky, it runs September 20 through October 19 at the Boston Court Pasadena in Pasadena. For tickets call 626-683-6801 or visit www.bostoncourtpasadena.org/events/iguana.

But when a long-buried secret comes to light—that Nora once committed fraud to secure a loan to save her husband’s life—their carefully curated world begins to unravel. Blackmail, deception, and shifting loyalties ignite a storm that forces Nora to make a life-altering decision: to break free from her marriage and discover her own identity.
